Recently, we collaborated with Teach For Portugal to measure the impact of their nationwide mentoring program. The results, as revealed in the Impact Report, are both inspiring and encouraging, reflecting significant improvements in students’ academic performance and motivation.

Empowering students through mentorship, addressing socio-economic disparities

From September 2022 to August 2023, classes supported by mentors from the Teach For Portugal network experienced a remarkable 51% reduction in negative grades. This milestone underscores the program’s efficacy in empowering students to overcome academic challenges and realize their full potential. With a focus on improving academic performance, skills, and motivation, Teach For Portugal’s mentoring program has positively impacted 12,000 students across 45 schools nationwide.

The impact of education extends far beyond the classroom, influencing social mobility and economic opportunity. In Portugal, socio-economic background significantly affects academic success, as highlighted in reports such as “Portugal, Social Balance 2023” and “Children in Portugal and Distance Learning (2021)”. Against this backdrop, Teach For Portugal’s commitment to providing mentorship and support to disadvantaged pupils is commendable. By bridging the gap between privilege and opportunity, the program is fostering a more equitable education system for all students.

A collaborative approach to impact measurement

At LTPlabs, we firmly believe in the power of data to drive informed decision-making. Our collaboration with Teach For Portugal involved rigorous data collection, treatment and analysis to accurately measure the program’s impact. The impact results were obtained by using control groups (classes from the same school and year without the support of mentors from Teach for Portugal) and applying differences in differences methodology to understand how both groups evolved from the beginning to the end of the year. Additionally, by leveraging our expertise in advanced analytics, we were able to provide a comprehensive dashboard with further details and explore valuable insights into Teach For Portugal’s effectiveness.
